'A Black Lady Sketch Show' Has a Premiere Date

Robin Thede helms the first major sketch comedy series created by and starring Black women.

New comedy show “A Black Lady Sketch Show” will premiere August 2 on HBO, writer and actor Robin Thede tweeted Monday (June 1).

“A Black Lady Sketch Show”—which Thede (“The Rundown with Robin Thede,” “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore”) created, wrote, stars in and co-executive produces—“will be the first Black woman sketch comedy series to be written by, directed by and starring Black women,” per HBO’s announcement.

A core cast of funny Black women, including Ashley Nicole Black, Quinta Brunson and Gabrielle Dennis will be rounded out with celebrity guests, including co-executive producer Issa Rae (“Insecure”). Lauren Ashley Smith (writer for “The Rundown with Robin Thede”) serves as head writer and co-executive producer.
