The Scream by Consuela Gaines

While incarcerated, it was often impossible for women to give voice to their pain, grief, or any other emotion. Crying, moaning, or screaming could result in punishment and isolation. In "the scream" Consuela Gaines vocalizes many of the emotions that she was forced to silence during the decades she was incarcerated. The power of her voice also reaches beyond the prison walls to connect with women everywhere who have silenced or muted their emotions because it wasn't safe for them to express themselves.
