The next installment of Dick Wolf's long-running "Law & Order" franchise seeks to turn hate crimes into network drama.

Deadline reported yesterday (September 4) that NBC ordered 13 episodes of "Law & Order: Hate Crimes," which draws from the stories of New York City's real life Hate Crimes Task Force. Wolf told Deadline that he believes the new procedural drama will launch "a real dialogue" about “a world where hate crimes have reached an egregious level.”

His faith in the project failed to sway Twitter users, many of whom wondered if Wolf—the White man who created a franchise that sensationally depicts cops as noble crusaders against unyielding criminality—can make this show well:

Law and order is coming out with a hate crimes offshoot, meanwhile, writers of colour can’t get airtime. Lmao but sure let’s watch BIPOC/queer folks get hurt/killed. No way that won’t backfire in this ~climate~

If you're gonna do it, just bring back regular Law & Order with Lt. Van Buren and another dope detective pair.

Nobody wants to see Law and Order: Hate Crimes when Trump is in the White House. That's the ultimate hate crime. pic.twitter.com/MfKJuVMO0H

SUCH a bad idea and am sure the showrunner and executive producer will be old straight white men and the writers youngish straight white men able to have black/brown/LGBTQ torture porn on tv every week#LawandOrder #LawandOrderHateCrimes #Tortureporn #Hardpass pic.twitter.com/z0XnevUkdC

Is this Law and Order: Hate Crimes going to be a 12 part limited series about how Trump got elected President?

I have watched an amazing amount of Law & Order and there is not a single thing I can imagine going more poorly than a hate crimes focused series.
