In 2016, tennis player Monica Puig became the first person to win a gold medal for Puerto Rico. Now, Puig—who turns 25 today (September 27)—uses her platform to support the commonwealth.

ABC News reported earlier this month that Puig has raised nearly $200,000 for household, cooking and medical supplies in the year since Hurricane Maria made landfall. She primarily sought donations through a crowdfunding campaign on the now-defunct YouCaring.com. Happy birthday to this shining star.
