Two flickering candles flank a display of clay calaveras, skulls, rendered in the colors of Google's logo on today's (November 2) homepage. The newest Doodle commemorates Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead.

Google's blog notes that the holiday can be traced back to Aztec spiritual practices, which honored death as a natural part of life. The Doodle highlights components of traditional ofrendas, ritual physical offerings. Ofrendas typically feature skulls made of sugar, pan de muerto, incense, candles, papel picado, fruit, toys, flowers, salt, water, photographs and other mementos of deceased family and friends.
