Ebola Updates, St. Louis Police Shoot and Kill Another Black Teen, Nobel in Literature
Here's what I'm reading up on this morning:
- Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the U.S., dies in a Dallas hospital. A sheriff's deputy named Michael Monnig, who entered the apartment Duncan was staying in without protective gear, is hospitalized with Ebola-like symptoms. Ashoka Mukpo continues treatment.
- St. Louis police shoot and kill 18-year-old Vonderrick Myers Jr. in a neighborhood just miles away from Ferguson.
- Kurdish fighters continue to take on IS in Kobane on the Syrian-Turkish border; as U.S. strikes persist, Turkey continues to refuse to intervene.
- At least 19 people are dead following clashes in Kashmir--the worst in two years.
- The lead investigator for the Secret Service escort scandal says he was directed to delay his team's report until after the 2012 election.
- Carl Icahn sends Apple's CEO Tim Cook a letter saying the company's stock is "dramatically undervalued," though he concludes that he's not trying to be critical.
- AT&T will shore up $105 million to settle claims that it crammed cell phone consumers' bills with unauthorized charges.
- The Nobel in literature goes to French writer Patrick Modiano. It's the 107th prize in the category--11 have gone to writers from France.
- According to a new CDC report, life expectancy in the U.S. reaches an all time high.
- A NASA telescope observes a spectacular pulsar--the brightest one recorded yet.
