On March 13, 2002, newspaper headlines declare that a late night resolution has been approved by the United Nations Security Council backing the creation of a Palestinian state for the first time. At the same time, Israeli Defense Forces continue their offensive, taking over several West Bank locations. Though it does not guarantee anything, the measure is an important step towards the creation of a lasting peace in this violent conflict. Meanwhile, the current U.S. administration plows onward with its priorities to expand its War on Terrorism, despite the increased disapproval of its allies. What is the UN’s role in these and other international conflicts that threaten to spill over and involve other countries?

For a deeper understanding and analysis of current events such as this one, try the Global Policy Forum website (www.globalpolicy.org), established to provide information that promotes \"a more open, accountable and democratic policy process at the global level,\" and more specifically, the United Nations. The site features in-depth documents and resources on the myriad issues that come before this multinational organization. the site is also helpful to people who are not so familiar with the subject, as it provides hundreds of introductory articles and explanations.

This website will be useful for social activists interested in expanding their breadth of knowledge on international institutions and how they are connected. What is the relationship between the UN and the IMF or World Bank? What is the role of the Security Council? The site also contains sections on specific themes, such as \"International Justice\" and \"Sanctions Against Iraq,\" and features up-to-date information on 9/11, globalization, nation-states, and more.

One of the downsides of the site may be that it has so many links to other information. On every page, there are hyperlinks that transport you to other websites, including official UN sites, which could get confusing. Use the \"Site Search\" function to help find what you are looking for. One useful addition would be a link to a chart or graphic displaying UN structure, its branches, and relationship to other global institutions.

In fighting for social justice, we must incorporate an understanding of international events, the role governments play, and ultimately, how these relate to our struggles at home. Getting the 411 on organizations like the United Nations helps to demystify the institutions that operate at the global level.
