Witness in Van: Freddie Gray Wasn’t Trying to Hurt Himself

By Aura Bogado May 01, 2015

Donta Allen, the 22-year-old who was in the van with Freddie Gray on April 12, is setting the record straight.

Based on a leaked Baltimore police document, The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Allen said Gray was “trying to injure himself.” Gray’s family attorney rejected the claim—and now Allen, who was interviewed by WBAL investigative reporter Jayne Miller, says he hardly heard anything in the van. That goes directly against reports that claim Allen reported hearing Gray was “banging against the walls.”

The results of the Baltimore police’s own investigation into what happened to Freddie Gray have now been handed over to the state prosecutor.
