In case you or someone you know still has trouble understanding the Black Panthers’ history, here’s some good news: "The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution" premieres tonight on PBS.
Stanley Nelson’s searing documentary tackles the genesis and dissolution of the Black revolutionary justice organization, and investigates the organization’s internal issues against the backdrop of constant assault from federal and local authorities across the country. Interviews with former Panthers, journalists and police officers combines with archival footage to ground "The Black Panthers" in a legacy of Black political resistance that still endures.
Since its 2015 Sundance screening, "The Black Panthers" has screened at film festivals and special showings throughout the country. And as the group nears its 50th anniversary—recently commemorated with the most-talked-about Super Bowl halftime performance in a years—this documentary could not be better timed.
Check out the latest trailer above, and catch the TV premiere on PBS tonight at 9 p.m. EST.
