On October 20, 2014, then Chicago Police Department officer Jason Van Dyke shot and killed 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, sparking days of protest in the city. He claimed that the Black teen charged at him with a knife, but dash cam video revealed that McDonald was shot while walking away from police.

In a departure from the trend of not pursuing charges against law enforcement officers who kill Black people in the United States, the Van Dyke—who is White—was eventually charged with six counts of first degree murder, one count of official misconduct and 16 charges of aggravated battery—one for each time he shot the boy.

Today (September 17), attorneys delivered opening statements in Cook County’s trial of Van Dyke. Chicago Sun-Times is livestreaming the trial alongside written analysis of the proceedings.
