In more than 100 events in 35 U.S. states and at least five other countries, including Canada, Japan and Portugal, thousands are rallying today (September 13) to show their support with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in its battle against the $3.78 billion Dakota Access Pipeline. Construction has resumed in a location less than two hours away from Lake Oahe after the federal government requested Energy Transfer, the company behind the pipeline, pause building there.
The #NoDAPL Day of Action participants are calling on President Barack Obama to end construction of the pipeline permanently.
The online description of the nationwide event states:
To defeat a pipeline, it takes a movement of people from all corners of the nation. That’s why on Tuesday, September 13, people around the country are taking part in a day of action in solidarity with Standing Rock calling on President Obama to instruct the Army Corps of Engineers to revoke the permits for this dirty oil pipeline.
Aside from today’s international protests, the tribe filed court documents yesterday (September 12) asking U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg, who ruled in favor of the pipeline, to recognize the government’s request to halt construction. But Energy Transfer is still moving forward with plans: Just today, CEO Kelcy Warren sent a memo to staff and media indicating its commitment to finishing construction, which, he claims, is 60 percent complete.
