Tony Awards Nominate More Blacks on Broadway [Video]

This morning the Tony Awards nominations were announced. And much respect goes out to the Broadway shows Fela!, Memphis and Fences for earning top nominations—the first two in the running for Best Musical and the latter for Best Revival Play. What makes these nominations applaudable is the fact that all three shows have central characters of color and two have Black directors. Finding opportunities on Broadway, whether as an actor or a director, has never been easy for people of color. This is why playwright August Wilson (writer of Fences), insisted on Black directors while he was living. But will these nominations just be seen as a result of having a Black family in the White House?
