To keep pressure on the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMP) for indiscriminately killing Breonna Taylor on March 13 and charging no one for five months, more than 40,000 people have signed a new petition demanding that Louisville companies—UPS, Ford Motor Company and Humana—do more to secure justice in her senseless death, UltraViolet announced on Monday (August 17).

Combined, UPS, Ford and Humana employ more than 50,000 people in Louisville, UltraViolet wrote in the petition, where 23.5 percent of residents are Black, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The petition notes that even though each company (Ford, Humana, UPS) has expressed support for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, they have not explicitly demanded justice for Taylor. 

Shaunna Thomas, co-founder and executive director of UltraViolet, said in a statement: 

Some of Louisville’s biggest employers have spoken out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. UPS pledged to give $3.2 million to racial justice organizations. Humana pledged $11.5 million to invest in the Louisville community. The CEO of Ford, which operates two plants in Louisville, has publicly expressed support for the Black Lives Matter movement. These companies are obviously eager to be perceived as anti-racist—but for multi-billion dollar companies, it’s easy to give money away.

These companies have a lot of power over public life in Louisville, which means hearing from them would greatly pressure Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, and the Louisville Metro Police Department to do right by Breonna. It’s time for them to speak up and demand that the officers who murdered Breonna Taylor as she slept be fired, arrested and charged.

On July 29, UltraViolet, Color of Change and Black Lives Matter Louisville activists aired an ad in Louisville that called on Kentucky’s attorney general Daniel Cameron (who is Black) and Louisville’s mayor Greg Fischer (who is white) to “Fire. Arrest. Charge. The police officers who killed her. Today.” 

“We know that this moment is getting tougher and tougher as it moves on,” said BLM activist Chanelle Helm. “Law enforcement agencies and the criminal justice systems love to evade accountability so we want to make sure that we hold the corporations supplying law enforcement and their support mechanisms accountable. ”
