Although George Lucas’ ‘Red Tails’ had a strong opening weekend, the film has not grossed anywhere near what Lucas spent to get the film to theaters.

Lucas ponied up the $58 million production budget and $35 million distribution costs (plus an additional amount for marketing) himself after every Hollywood studio rejected his projects because it’s protagonists were all black.

The lifetime gross for ‘Red Tails’ is currently at $45,281,850.

Adding insult to injury is that this exactly what Hollywood studio executives told Lucas would happen.
