New Yorkers had an extra special reason to celebrate at Gay Pride this year. On Friday, June, the New York State Legislature and Governor Andrew Cuomo passed the Marriage Equality Act, which allows same-sex couples to marry in less than a month.
It’s been a long time coming. In 2006, the New York Court of Appeals ruled that there is no constitutional right to same-sex marriage in the state. That, of course, didn’t stop advocates of marriage equality. They steadily gathered up support and, five years later, were key to New York becoming the most populous state in the nation to allow gay marriage.
The final decision couldn’t of come at a better time. Below are images of celebration from this year’s celebration. Happy Pride, everyone.

From photographer Zach Roberts: "The annual New York City Drag March was already scheduled to happen that night, so it turned into celebrations for the passing of the bill. The march ended in front of the famous Stonewall Inn where riots happened decades ago spawning the modern gay rights movement."
