Ford Models Working on Promo Material Featuring Only Models of Color

But will efforts to recruit more models of color last very long?

Ford Models, one of the biggest international modeling agencies, is in the process of creating promotional materials featuring their black models.

Last month Ford+, the agency’s plus-size model division, put out a "blonde story" to showcase their blonde plus size models. This past weekend Ford Models had another shoot featuring only models of color from the agencies different divisions, including Ford+ and Ford Women, that includes the group’s more traditional models. The models featured ranged from size 4 to 14 and included Marquita Pring, Bre Joyner and Damaris Lewis.

A spokeswoman told the Huffington Post this concept is all about showing diversity:

It is the 2nd in a series of promos to highlight beauty. The inspiration was the breakthrough into fashion of style icons that weren’t the norm at that time. It was Bianca Jagger, Diana Ross, Beverly Johnson and Iman. This was celebration of the of the models of that era. As the plus models today are breaking ground, this is the nod to the models and their inspirational movement that put Beverly Johnson on the cover of American Vogue in August of 1974., who first reported this story, had a "little spy" on the set and published the images from the photoshoot. They also raise an important question: Is this isolating rather than integrating?

Ultimately it comes down to what kind of model the client is looking for, so Ford’s plans to get these models in front of the eyes of their clients, who’ll ultimately make casting decisions, is a step in the right direction. However, we certainly hope that Ford Models are also continuously integrating their models of color alongside their white counterparts.
