Fans of the acclaimed independent film "Dear White People" now have reason to celebrate: Netflix just ordered a series based on the movie.
Netflix announced the series order yesterday (May 5), saying in a statement that it will enter production later this year before hitting screens in 2017. Justin Simien, who directed the original 2014 film, will write the series’ ten half-hour episodes and direct the first one. The series, like the film, will depict students of color navigating life a predominantly White univeristy.
"During the film’s release, I had the pleasure to speak with hundreds of students and faculty across a variety of college campuses dealing with these very issues in real time," Simien said in Netflix’s announcement. "I’m so grateful to have this platform—not only to give a voice to those too often unheard in our culture, but to also tell great stories from new points of views."
