Detectives in Dallas called on the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for help following the death of another Black transgender women on Saturday (June 1), police chief U. Reneé Hall said during a press conference.   

Chynal Lindsey’s body was reportedly found in White Rock Lake with obvious signs of homicide. “This is the second individual who is transgender who is deceased in our community, and we are concerned,” Hall said. “We are actively and aggressively investigating this case, and we’ve reached out to our federal partners to assist us in these efforts.”

Hall asked the public for information on Lindsey’s friends and with whom she was last seen, “We are asking for our community’s assistance in this tragic event. We don’t have all of the answers.”

Lindsey’s death comes less than a month after the May 18 death of Muhlaysia Booker, another Black transgender woman killed in Dallas. In April, another transgender woman whose name has not been released was stabbed, and in October 2018, Brittany White was found dead from gunshots in her car, WFAA reported.

When asked at the conference if law enforcement officers think there is a serial killer attacking Black women, Hall said there is not currently any evidence that would substantiate that claim. But, Hall said that getting the FBI involved will help her department ascertain the nature of the crime.

“Oftentimes, there’s a question as to whether or not this was a hate crime [and] that’s why we reach out to our federal partners so that we will have their resources brought onto this investigative team in order to find out exactly what we need to know,” Hall said.
