The New York Times reports today (November 6) that Jean-Raymond earned the award nearly five years after founding Pyer Moss. He has established a reputation for collections and runway shows that incorporate the themes of Black resistance and culture. A 2015 collection centered the Black Lives Matter movement and its protest of police violence in Black communities; Jean-Raymond seated families of people killed by police in the front row for the collection’s New York Fashion Week debut:

The Times adds that Jean-Raymond accepted the award while wearing a leather jacket from his fall collection, which celebrates the legacy of Black cowgirl and cowboy culture.
