rntVogue reports that the honor comes with a $400,000 prize and a year of individualized mentorship. It is one of the most prestigious awards for rising talent in the world of high fashion.

The New York Times reports today (November 6) that Jean-Raymond earned the award nearly five years after founding Pyer Moss. He has established a reputation for collections and runway shows that incorporate the themes of Black resistance and culture. A 2015 collection centered the Black Lives Matter movement and its protest of police violence in Black communities; Jean-Raymond seated families of people killed by police in the front row for the collection’s New York Fashion Week debut:

rntJean-Raymond told Vogue that his most recent show drew from the Green Book, a guide for Black travelers in the Jim Crow South, to "imagine what the African-American experience would look like without the constant threat of racism."

The Times adds that Jean-Raymond accepted the award while wearing a leather jacket from his fall collection, which celebrates the legacy of Black cowgirl and cowboy culture.
