How can Indigenous Americans promote health and reclaim their spiritual and cultural identities after enduring centuries of atrocities and genocide? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Apparently, by exploring their traditional food systems to better understand the changes in their foodways and the land. The new documentary \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Gather<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u201d captures that process, and it begins streaming today on <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>iTunes<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> and <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Amazon<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>. Free DVDs will also be available<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> for organizations in Indian Country, according to the film’s web site<\/a>. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The 74-minute documentary follows three people on the frontlines of helping their communities literally reconnect to their Indigenous roots. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>White Mountain Apache Nation<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> chef <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Nephi Craig<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> opened the Indigenous-centered <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Caf\u00e9 Gozh\u00f3\u00f3<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> to highlight tribal foodways and provide professional development for people in substance abuse recovery in Arizona. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Elsie DuBray<\/a> (Cheyenne River Sioux<\/a>), then a high-school scientist, studies <\/span>bison and<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> indigenous diets.<\/strong> And <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Ancestral Guard<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, a group of environmental activists from Northern California\u2019s <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Yurok Nation<\/a>, is <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>fighting to save the Klamath River and its sacred salmon. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cGather\u201d is directed by James Beard Foundation Award-winning filmmaker <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Sanjay Rawal<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> (\u201cFood Chains<\/a>\u201d), executive produced by <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Jason Momoa<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> and made in partnership with the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>First Nations Development Institute<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, a Native nonprofit in Colorado. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
