Earlier this year, President Donald Trump released his proposed budget for 2017, which featured cuts to programs that bolster the lived experiences of people of color living in America. Now, his administration is releasing its vision for 2018—and critics are worried that it will further decrease quality of life for many while bolstering the bottom lines of the wealthy

Office of Management and Budget director Mick Mulvaney held an “off-camera” press briefing yesterday (May 22) to detail key points of the fiscal year 2018 budget, which is titled “A New Foundation for American Greatness.”

During the briefing, Mulvaney explained his view of the budget, which cuts spending by $3.6 trillion over the course of 10 years. From the transcript, provided by the White House:

If I had sort of a subtitle for this budget, it would be the Taxpayer First Budget. This is I think the first time in a long time that an administration has written a budget through the eyes of the people who are actually paying the taxes. So often in Washington I think we look only on the recipient side: How does the budget affect those who either receive or don’t receive benefits?

As The Washington Post details, the $4.094 trillion budget request would cut funding to safety-net programs to the tune of $1 trillion over ten years, with drastic reductions in funding to Medicaid, food assistance, the Children’s Health Insurance Program and other programs aimed at aiding people living in poverty.

Mulvaney will detail the budget today (May 23) at 11:00 a.m.—the same time the full text is released to the public. Watch the briefing above.
