He issued a statement today (February 15), which appears below, courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/edatpost\/status\/831969550619009032\" target=\"_blank\">The Washington Post<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>After careful consideration and discussions with my family, I am withdrawing my nomination for secretary of labor. I am honored to have been considered by President Donald Trump to lead the Department of Labor and put America\u2019s workers and businesses back on a path to sustainable prosperity. I want [to] thank President Trump for his nomination. I also thank my family and my many supporters\u2014employees, businesses, friends and people who have voiced their praise and hopeful optimism for the policies and new thinking I would have brought to America as secretary of labor. While I won\u2019t be serving in the administration, I fully support the president and his highly qualified team.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Puzder has been the subject of several <a href=\"https:\/\/colorlines.com\/articles\/fast-food-workers-continue-protest-andrew-puzders-labor-secretary-nomination\" target=\"_blank\">protests<\/a>, including one yesterday (February 14), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/powerpost\/now-6-republicans-are-on-the-fence-about-andrew-puzder\/2017\/02\/15\/e34cada6-f38b-11e6-8d72-263470bf0401_story.html?utm_term=.a763e52a7b7e\" target=\"_blank\">The Washington Post<\/a> reported that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told the White House that Pudzer did not have enough votes to be confirmed. At least 12 Republican senators were reportedly planning to vote against him.<\/p>\n<p>Labor activists have raised <a href=\"https:\/\/colorlines.com\/articles\/trumps-labor-secretary-pick-opposes-minimum-wage-increases-and-workers-who-protest\" target=\"_blank\">concerns<\/a> regarding Puzder\u2019s labor rights violations, opposition to an increase in minimum wage and past comments about robots making better employees than humans because, \u201cThey\u2019re always polite, they always upsell, they never take a vacation, they never show up late, there\u2019s never a slip-and-fall, or an age, sex or race discrimination case.\u201d Congressmen have taken issue with his company\u2019s racy advertisements and his dealings with an undocumented worker in his home, while some conservatives feel that his immigration stance does not line up with Trump\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The withdrawal comes hours after the Oprah Winfrey Network provided senators with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/online\/oprah-winfrey-network-reportedly-gave-senators-tape-of-puzders-ex-wife-making-abuse-allegations\/\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a> of Puzder\u2019s ex-wife talking about the abuse he inflicted on her during their marriage. She has since recanted the allegations. While Winfrey did not send the video to the press, another of the guests on that episode of \u201cThe Oprah Winfrey Show\u201d sent it to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/02\/puzder-oprah-winfrey-labor-235030\" target=\"_blank\">Politico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Activists see the withdrawal as a win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Donald Trump first tapped Andy Puzder to be labor secretary, fast-food workers told the president that if he sided with fast-food CEOs instead of fast-food workers, he\u2019d be on the wrong side of history,\u201d Darin Brooks, a Hardee&#8217;s worker and member of the Fight for $15\u2019s Durham, North Carolina, chapter said in an emailed statement. \u201cWe rallied outside Puzder\u2019s stores nationwide and showed America how his burger empire was built on low pay, wage theft, sexual harassment and intimidation. And today, we are on the right side of history.
