Joy over last June’s announcement that the Marvel comics’ new Spider-Man would be a Black Latino teen quickly turned to disappoinment when, just a day later, Marvel and Sony announced a cinematic "Spider-Man" reboot with another White guy. Now, reports indicate that actress and musician Zendaya will star in the film.

Many news outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter and Mic, picked up Deadline‘s report yesterday (March 7) that 19-year-old Zendaya Coleman wil star in the upcoming film. Deadline reported that she might play a character named "Michelle," and suggested that it was a "key role." The still-untitled film will hit theaters in July 2017.

Zendaya is best known for starring roles in the Disney Channel series "K.C. Undercover" and "Shake it Up!" and she has a burgeoing music career. She made news last year when Fashion Police" host Giuliana Rancic suggested that the then-dreadlocked star smelled like "weed" and "patchouli."
