Mensa’s new song takes its name from the number of times Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke shot 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. The police shooting and subsequent suspected coverup sparked outrage that almost cost mayor Rahm Emanuel his job and sparked a new protest chant: "16 shots." Mensa, a Chicago native, appeared in protest photographs after authorities released dashcam video of McDonald’s death.  

The event aimed to raise funds and awareness for the struggles of Flint, Michigan, where government officials knowingly sold lead-tainted water to predominantly-Black city residents. Okayplayer reports that the event raised $145,000.
