What We Know About ‘Us,’ Jordan Peele’s Next Horror Show

By Sameer Rao Dec 20, 2018

Jordan Peele has kept most of the details for his next horror film, "Us," under lock and key since announcing it in May. But the director and the film’s leads, "Black Panther" co-stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke, finally offered more info in an interview with Entertainment Weekly today (December 20).

The article builds upon a plot description reported by /Film on December 9. "Us" features Nyong’o and Duke as Adelaide and Gabe Wilson, a couple who takes their kids (Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex) to Adelaide’s childhood beachhouse. Adelaide’s trauma-triggered paranoia turns to fear when "the Wilsons see four figures holding hands and standing silently at the bottom of their driveway." Elisabeth Moss ("The Handmaid’s Tale") and Tim Heidecker ("Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!") star as members of the Tyler family, who spend time on the beach with the Wilsons.

rntEntertainment Weekly reports that Peele prepared Nyong’o for the role by giving her some of his favorite horror films, including "The Babadook" and "A Tale of Two Sisters," so they could film with "a shared language." Peele also reveals that he named the film’s monsters "the Tethered."

Nyong’o mentions that the movie “turns into this relentless nightmare that taps into [Adelaide’s] deepest fears and ours as well—the idea that we might be our own worst enemies.”

Duke offers a brief description of Gabe: “He’s very sporadic and impulsive, he’s the husband and the alpha, and I think that leads to some of the conflict that is in the marriage when we meet the Wilsons.”
