WATCH: Stirring New Trailer for the Mildred and Richard Loving Biopic

By Sameer Rao Jul 13, 2016

Mildred and Richard Loving fought anti-miscegenation laws to protect their love across race boundaries, taking their case to the U.S. Supreme Court and destroying those laws with the Loving v. Virginia ruling in 1967. Their story is set to hit the big screen via a new film, appropriately titled "Loving," whose official theatrical trailer debuted yesterday (July 12).

The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, stars Ethiopian-Irish actress Ruth Negga ("Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.") and White Australian actor Joel Edgerton ("The Great Gatsby") as Mildred and Richard Loving. The interracial couple married in Washington, D.C. in 1958 and they were later arrested under Virginia’s anti-miscegenation laws. The film depicts their legal fight to protect their relationship and their family, which ultimately ended with an unanimous ruling that made it illegal for states to prohibit relationships between people of different races.

The movie hits theaters across the country on November 4. Check out the trailer above.
