"Crazy Rich Asians" director Jon M. Chu ("Now You See Me 2") and book author Kevin Kwan turned down Netflix’s seven-figure offer to prove that a contemporary movie with an Asian cast could excel at the box office. The opening weekend box office estimate suggests that they made the right choice.

Box Office Mojo reported yesterday (August 19) that the romantic comedy earned an estimated $34 million in the five days since its extended opening weekend began on Wednesday (August 15). That number includes $25.2 million between Friday (August 17) and yesterday (August 19)—the three days that typically constitute a movie’s opening weekend. Those sales pushed the film to the top of the domestic box office, and exceed the movie’s reported $30 million budget.
