Top 5 #WhiteGirlsDoItBetter Rebuttals

By Sameer Rao Jul 13, 2015

While there isn’t a clear consensus on how #WhiteGirlsDoItBetter emerged as a hashtag—this Voactiv piece dates it to use by pornography accounts and enthusiasts promoting content featuring black men with white women—there is a consensus that its resurgence in the past few days was connected to Twitter users posting selfies and promoting racist ideas about the superiority of white women. It seems to have flared up particularly in the wake of Serena Williams’ victory over Maria Sharapova in Wimbeldon.

It didn’t take long for Twitter users (Black Twitter especially) to take the hashtag, a la #AskBobby, and turn it into something attacking its origins. Numerous responses dealt specifically with Serena Williams’ Wimbeldon victory, which was generally received with generous amounts of racist vitriol. Another, from "Hunger Games" star Amandla Stenberg, was aimed at Kylie Jenner’s use of cornrows. But all in all, it was a pretty hilarious and sometimes insightful exercise in repurposing hashtags.
