rntEbony reported yesterday (August 20) that Biles earned the top score in the uneven bars, vault, floor routine, balance beam and all-around competition (combined performance). According to USA Gymnastics, the governing body that oversees the summer competition, Biles’ accomplishments make her the first woman to win in every event since Dominique Dawes in 1994. The 21-year-old is also the first adult competitor to achieve that feat since 1971 and the first female gymnast to win five all-arounds since USA Gymnastics first administered the competition in 1970.
“I didn’t think, coming into the events this year that I would do as well as I did,” Biles told USA Gymnastics about her overall score of 119.850. “I knew I was capable of it, but I kept telling my family, I don’t know if I’m going to be able to calm myself down the way I did before and handle the nerves. But so far, so good.”
