Misty Copeland created her own history as the first Black woman to be the American Ballet Theatre’s principal dancer. Now, America’s most famous ballerina is reinterpreting history by appearing in re-creations of French artist Edgar Degas’ historic works on ballerinas.
Copeland appears in a new Harper’s Bazaar spread and story ahead of a new Degas exhibit at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. She reinterpreted a number of the artist’s paintings and one of his sculptures, all of which were originally inspired by dancers at Paris’s Opera Ballet.
The shoot also coincides with Monday’s (February 8) PBS premiere of "A Ballerina’s Tale," a new documentary about Copeland’s rise to fame in the predominantly White ballet world. You can see the documentary in full over at PBS.com.
