Rep. Keith Ellison’s Tearful Defense of Muslim American Patriots

Mar 11, 2011

If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s Rep. Keith Ellison’s emotion closing to his testimony at [yesterday’s hearing on Muslim American "radicalization."](https://colorlines.com/archives/2011/03/the_congressional_theater_of_peter_kings_muslim_hearings.html) Ellison, who is Muslim, described the story of Mohammad Salman Hamdani, a 9/11 first responder who was killed trying to help people escape from the World Trade Center, but who was falsely accused of having been "in league with the attackers," as Ellison tearfully explained. Ellison used the story to make an impassioned plea for understanding that Muslim Americans are patriots who have been essential parts of the *legitimate* piece of domestic anti-terrorism efforts. Seth Freed Wessler has written about the less legitimate [FBI practice of cultivating its own so-called homegrown terrorists](https://colorlines.com/archives/2010/12/the_fbi_caught_another_homegrown_1.html), by targeting converts in entrapment stings.
