Rapper Kemba is in ‘Groundhog Day’ Hell as He Relives Police Harrassment in New Music Video

Bronx rapper Kemba, formerly known as YCTheCynic, depicts routine police harrassment and media demonization of people of color as a recurring nightmare in his new video for "The New Black Theory."

In a statement e-mailed to Colorlines, the MC described the video’s concept as "a ‘Groundhog Day’-style visual about how the news tells us that we won’t be harassed by cops if we dress ‘properly.’" Like that movie, which follows a man repeating the same day with slight variations, the video features a Black man stuck in a toxic sequence of events. Each day begins with him watching news clips with Geraldo Rivera’s "hoodie" comments or police brutality footage before going out, in various outfits, and being stopped-and-frisked by the same two plainclothes officers.

Watch it above.
