Prince’s Websites Curated to Create New Online Museum

By Sameer Rao Jul 05, 2016

Prince superfans and newcomers alike now have a new way to learn even more about the late artist: an online archive.

The Prince Online Museum, which launched yesterday (July 4), incorporates all 16 of his official websites from 1996 onward, plus an "interactive" CD-Rom experience from ’94. The archive also features a timeline with testimony from people involved in each project’s creation and maintenence.

“They are snapshots in time to experience the web sites just like they were when they were active,” Prince Online Museum director Sam Jennings told The New York Times. “Other than the music, there is another side to Prince, which was his fierce independence and wanting to connect directly with his audience without any middlemen.” Jennings worked with Prince for nine years and launched the NPG Music Club—a then-novel distribution and fan connection hub—with him in 2001. The Prince Online Museum, which features the NPG club, launched on the 10th anniversary of that site’s shutdown.
