Oprah Show: “Gay Around the World”

By Jonathan Adams Oct 23, 2007

On Wednesday, Oprah will take discuss the rights for gays and lesbians around the world. Talking to a few people of color, Oprah will interview the UK’s John Amaechi, a former NBA basketball player who made headlines after coming out last year; an Indian prince, Manvendra Singh Gohil, who also came out last year despite the disdain of the royal family; and Jamaican poet, Staceyann Chin, who left her home for New York City because of the deadly homophobia. While the panel is packed with people of color, I hope that Oprah’s interviews are not reduced to the persistent misconception that communities of color are the most homophobic. Here’s a preview, but let’s watch tomorrow and see.
