It's a first for the talk show host in her magazine's 12-year history.

For the last twelve years Oprah has been on the cover of every issue of O, her eponymous magazine. Sometimes [twice](http://mediaoutrage.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Oprah5.jpg) at [a time](http://img2.bdbphotos.com/images/orig/e/y/eyuspov20mq00q2.jpg). But for the first time ever she’s covering her magazine in her natural hair. For the September 2012 issue of O magazine Oprah’s showing off her natural hair. It was such a big cultural moment that O magazine [hailed the event](http://www.oprah.com/style/Oprahs-Natural-Hair-on-O-Magazine-September-2012–Oprahs-Real-Hair) on its own site. Oprah’s hair debut unsurprisingly set off [ripples](http://www.clutchmagonline.com/2012/08/is-that-oprahs-natural-hair-on-the-cover-of-os-september-issue/) of conversation, [and debate](http://thelook.today.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/08/02/13073713-oprahs-natural-hair-debut-stirs-controversy?lite), throughout the blogosphere. The cover debut comes the same week that the Internet’s [been up in arms](http://jezebel.com/5930785/haters-need-to-shut-the-hell-up-about-gabby-douglass-hair) over Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas’ hair. As Dodai Stewart [writes](http://jezebel.com/5930785/haters-need-to-shut-the-hell-up-about-gabby-douglass-hair), "The point is that hair — black hair, especially — remains a hot-button issue. Hair is political, laden with subtext and meaning." Still, as big a deal as Oprah is making about her hair, and as much time as she’s spent on makeovers on her TV shows and in the pages of her magazine–September’s is even O’s official makeover issue–she insists the only real and sustainable personal changes are, "those in which something inside the receiver clicks, aligning with that which is being received. The only way to real transformation is through the mind."
