The announcements just keep coming as Marvel prepares to release its rebooted, more diverse comics under the All-New, All-Different initiative. The latest: Red Wolf, the company’s first Native American character who was introduced to readers in 1970, is getting a new book of his own this December.

Originally called William Talltrees, Red Wolf first emerged in “Avengers #80” and had a 1972 nine-issue series that found him in the Old West. The updated version places him in the American Southwest kicking criminal butt in what the company calls a “gritty, brutal crime series.”

According to Mashable, the comic will be written by Nathan Edmondson and the pages will be illustrated by Dalibor Talajić. Artist Jeffrey Veregge, who is a member of the Port Gamble S’Klallam tribe and has Suquamish and Duwamish heritage, is on board to create the covers and consult on the project.

“There’s not a character like Red Wolf out there right now,” Veregge told Mashable. “As a Native, I’m really excited to see that he can do things, he can figure out things and stand with Captain America, and hold his own in this universe. That’s what’s awesome about it: You have all these characters of different nationalities and ethnicities, but it’s not all about their culture. It’s about them being a hero.”

The creators maintain that Red Wolf will not be affiliated with any existing Native American tribe. “Nobody should go to this looking as its historical,” Edmondson said. “He comes from another dimension, after all. But it’s very important for us to approach it in as authentic a way as possible. Jeffery offers this, and not just for consultation, but with his creative input—his covers jump out from 100 feet away.”
