The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) recognized several television and film actors of color when it unveiled the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards nominations today (December 13). But like the Golden Globes, this year’s SAG Awards nominee pool is far less diverse than last year’s.

Most contenders of color are nominated within casts competing for ensemble awards. This includes the Desi-led cast of Kumail Nanjiani‘s autobiographical "The Big Sick." That group competes against the stars of Dee Rees‘ "Mudbound" and Jordan Peele‘s "Get Out" in the "Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture" category. 

Nominees of color for individual film acting awards include Hong Chau (“Downsizing”) and Mary J. Blige (“Mudbound”) for “Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role." Daniel Kaluuya ("Get Out") and Denzel Washington (“Roman J. Israel, Esq.”) compete in the complimentary "Male Actor in a Leading Role" category. 

On the television side, the casts of "Black-ish" and "Orange is the New Black" face off for the "Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series" statue. "Black-ish" star Anthony Anderson joins Aziz Ansari ("Master of None") in the "Male Actor in a Comedy Series" set.   

In addition, Sterling K. Brown ("This Is Us") received a "Male Performer in a Drama Series" nod. Previous SAG Award winner Uzo Aduba ("Orange is the New Black") earned another nomination in the "Female Performer in a Comedy Series" group. 

SAG-AFTRA also recognized film veteran Morgan Freeman ("Going in Style") with the 54th Lifetime Achievement Award.
