Mira Nair ("Queen of Katwe") will cross the pond to direct the first-ever British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) narrative program whose cast consists exclusively of people of color.

Deadline reports today (March 14) that the veteran Indian-American filmmaker will turn "A Suitable Boy" into an eight-part limited series. The epic 1993 novel by Vikram Seth takes place in India in 1951, shortly after the sectarian violence that accompanied the Partition of British India into independent Pakistan and India. "A Suitable Boy" follows four families as they experience religious conflict and changes to the feudal social hierarchy after independence. The title refers to the search for the right man to marry protagonist Lata.

Per Deadline, "A Suitable Boy" will exclusively feature thespians of color, breaking tradition for most BBC period series. The publication added that the series will be shot on location in northern India. The BBC has yet to announce a premiere date.
