A new trailer for the upcoming Freeform reboot of teen drama “Party of Five” takes a dramatic turn with a plot twist that is as heartbreaking as it is relevant. Where the original 1994 series saw the Salinger siblings’ parents die in a car crash, the new show follows the five Acosta children after their parents are abruptly deported to Mexico.

Starring Niko Guardado, Brandon Larracuente, Elle Paris Legaspi and Emily Tosta (the fifth sibling is an infant), the show exposes the harsh reality of life for a Latinx family living in the United States. In the trailer, released on May 14, the parents are hauled into court in a challenge to their citizenship. The aftermath is that the children are left to struggle, and ultimately survive, as a family on their own. As the eldest child Emilio (played by Larracuente) says in the trailer, “Mommy and Papi managed with a lot less than we had and they figured it out.”

Details for the premiere of “Party of Five” have yet to be announced. In the meantime, watch the trailer:
