Justice and Community are Inseparable Ideas

A great reminder from a ColorLines reader.

By Kai Wright Dec 01, 2010

Over the holiday weekend, Tammy Johnson wrote about a handful of things she was thankful the racial justice movement achieved in 2010. She asked ColorLines readers to chime in with additions to the list. Reader Stephanie Greenlea offered a personal one on our Facebook page that resonated with me:

Thankful for the relationships–real and robust–that can only be built through this type of movement. I am daily challenged to honesty, trust, creativity, interdependence, understanding, courage, patience and love. Thankful for the folks who so wonderfully accept these challenges and inspire me to go another round. Beyond making a more beautiful world, this movement has given me my very best friends and my greatest loves.

We don’t talk about that enough. Working together to create a just society necessarily involves building community. They’re inseparable ideas. I like that.
