John Leguizamo will take his one-man show “Latin History for Morons” on the road next month. The tour will open with two nights at the Apollo Theater in Harlem on June 20, NBC News reported yesterday (April 1). 

The Tony Award-winning play, which enjoyed an extended Broadway run last season, will hit more than 15 cities, including Minneapolis, Atlanta, Miami, Philadelphia and Dallas and wrap up with a seven-week stand in Los Angeles.

Much like “Spic-O-Rama” and “Mambo Mouth,” Leguizamo’s latest draws inspiration from obstacles in his life, in this case, when his son was bullied for his race. Finding humor in heartbreak, Leguizamo sets out to school folks on 3,000 years of Latinx history from the Aztec and Mayan empires to the influence of Latin America and the Carribbean on the formation of the United States.

“Education is the first step to empowerment,” Leguizamo told NBC News last November. “We need to see the power of our contributions to feel more inside ourselves, more inside our bodies, more inside our culture. And now [after the experience of putting together ‘Latin History for Morons’] I feel like we Latinx people created America.”
