Issa Rae, ‘Get Out’ Grab Key 2018 Golden Globe Nominations

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced its list of Golden Globe Award nominees today (December 11).

This year’s group of artists is less Black and Brown than last year’s, when “Moonlight” and “The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” scored the highest numbers of film and television nominations, respectively. And a few critically acclaimed projects from creators of color, including “Queen Sugar” and “The Big Sick,” didn’t receive any nominations. But the HFPA did nominate several projects and thespians of color.

The Shape of Water,” from Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, earned seven nominations—the most of any film. Elsewhere in the movie categories, “Get Out" collected two nods: one for “Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy” (which director Jordan Peele notably didn’t like) and another for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy” for star Daniel Kaluuya.

Women of color dominate the “Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture” category. Octavia Spencer (“The Shape of Water”), Hong Chau (“Downsizing”) and Mary J. Blige (“Mudbound”) are three of the five nominees in that group.

Other feature film nominees of color include Denzel Washington (“Roman J. Israel, Esq.”) for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture—Drama,” and Robert Lopez (“Coco”), Raphael Saadiq (“Mudbound”) and Mariah Carey (“The Star”) for “Best Original Song—Motion Picture.”

On the television side, “This Is Us” received three nominations. The drama, which boasts a predominantly Black writing team, is the only show on a basic cable network to compete in the “Best Television Series—Drama” pool. Star Sterling K. Brown, whose portrayal of Randall Pearson earned an Emmy Award earlier this year, received a “Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series—Drama” nomination.

Insecure” auteur Issa Rae clinched a nomination for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series—Musical or Comedy.”

Black-ish” and “Master of None” will face off for “Best Television Series—Musical or Comedy.” Those series’ leading men—Anthony Anderson and Aziz Ansari, respectively—compete for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series—Musical or Comedy.”
