ICYMI: Greenpeace Formally Endorses the Movement for Black Lives Platform

By Yessenia Funes Oct 13, 2016

Greenpeace, a global voice on the environment, has formally endorsed The Movement for Black Lives platform. The international organization released a statement yesterday (October 12) on why it was endorsing the Vision for Black Lives: Policy Demands for Black Power, Freedom and Justice.

The statement reads:

As an organization founded to promote peace, non-violence, and justice, we have a responsibility to take action against systemic violence and racism in this country. That includes the murder of Black folks at the hands of police as well as the policies that allow those transgressions to go unpunished.

But we cannot simply point to where the system is broken; we have to fight for an overhaul of those systems. That’s why today, Greenpeace has endorsed the Vision for Black Lives, a six-part agenda to advance Black dignity by building Black political will and power.

Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard and Program Director David Barre signed off on the formal endorsement.

They wrote:

In introducing this platform, Movement for Black Lives organizers wrote that they intended to “assert a clear vision, particularly for those who claim to be our allies, of the world we want them to help us create.”

At Greenpeace, we’re taking that call to heart and doubling down on our commitment to place justice at the center of our fight for a green and peaceful future. For most of our history, the environmental movement has left communities of color behind and failed to lift up the voices of those most impacted by environmental injustice. We cannot allow that anymore.

We’ve made important progress, but the scale of the challenge compels us to do more.

We must work together to confront the unjust structures and exploitative industries targeting Black communities. We must recognize and create space for Black leadership in the environmental movement and support the centering of Black voices and Black-led solutions in the movement for racial justice, as our allies have done by articulating this vision.

The platform calls for divesting from fossil fuels, working toward community solutions and addressing the environmental racism which places toxic facilities closest to communities of color. As Greenpeace notes, the platform also demands democracy for Black people in the U.S. “Corporate influence in American politics and disenfranchisement of Black Americans is getting in the way of progress on everything from climate change to police reform,” reads the statement.

No other major environmental organization has endorsed the platform. The Sierra Club issued a statement after the platform’s release but did not formally endorse it. However, several groups—including the Environmental Defense Fund and Center for Biological Diversity—have voiced support for the Black Lives Matter movement, separate from The Movement for Black Lives.
