HBCU Building, Historic Chicano Neighborhoods on 2016 List of Most Endangered Places

By Sameer Rao Oct 06, 2016

The 2016 list of the country’s most endangered historic places, released yesterday (October 5), features several sites with tremendous importance to communities of color around the country.

The annual list is published by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and it identifies places of historical significance that are under threat of development, demolition or other outside damage. Of the 11 places on this year’s list, four have significance to groups of color:

  • Azikiwe-Nkrumah Hall at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, the oldest building at the country’s oldest degree-granting historically Black college or university (HBCU)

  • Bears Ears, a pair of adjacent buttes in Utah that contain archeological sites and sacred grounds for Navajo and Hopi Native peoples

  • Chihuahuita and El Segundo Barrio, two of the oldest neighborhoods in El Paso, Texas, and important cultural centers for the city’s Chicano community

  • Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin, Texas, widely acknowledged as the first Southern golf course to desegregate
