As more and more of the film- and television-loving world moves to using streaming services, it should follow that transformative art finds its home where it can be most easily accessed. So it makes sense that a film like 2011’s "Pariah" has landed on Netflix.

The absorbing film from Dee Rees (who directed Queen Latifah in "Bessie") features Adepero Oduye ("12 Years A Slave," "Half Nelson") as Alike, a college-bound black teen who comes to grips with her own identity as a lesbian despite her mother’s (played by Kim Wayans) religious objections and other family strife.

The film premiered at the 2011 Sundance Festival and garnered Oduye a Spirit Award nomination for Best Female Lead.
