Film on Alice Walker Nears Finish Line, But Needs Your Help

Oct 21, 2011

There’s a feature documentary in the final stages of production about Alice Walker, one of the the first black women to win a Pulitzer Prize for her novel "The Color Purple." But it needs your help to reach the finish line.

Director Pratibha Parmar and producer Shaheen Haq say they’re done with 85 percent of "Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth" and have only gotten this far because of individual donations and help from grants. But they’ve reached a point where they want to release the film relatively soon to coincide with the 30th anniversary of "The Color Purple." And they need all the financial help the can get.

Parmar and Haq have started an online fundraising campaign to raise $50,000 within the next two-months.

Funding documentaries is no easy task, but it’s even harder for women. "If we look a the startling fact that only 7 percent of directors, 13 percent of writers, and 20 percent of producers are female, it’s not hard to see what we are up against," Parmar writes on the fundraising page. "Given such a dearth of female representation behind the camera, is it any wonder that we continue to struggle to find funding for female stories and voices?"

Below is a snippet from the Director explaining why "Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth" needs to be made.

Funding independent film is an uphill climb at the best of times but for women it is no picnic. If we look a the startling fact that only 7% of directors, 13% of writers, and 20% of producers are female, it’s not hard to see what we are up against. Given such a dearth of female representation behind the camera, is it any wonder that we continue to struggle to find funding for female stories and voices?

We want all women and girls to be empowered around the globe, to believe in their own voices and their own truths. And this is why we need stories of women like Alice Walker who are fearless risk-takers and history makers.

Parmar and Haq have done a tremendous amount of work already with "Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth" including securing an air date with PBS in the United States. They’ve also interviewed big names including Gloria Steinem, Yoko Ono, Steven Spielberg, Angela Davis, the late Howard Zinn and Danny Glover.
