Despite his contract stalemate with the Denver Broncos, wide receiver Demaryius Thomas had reason to celebrate on Monday. His mother, Katina Smith, was among the 46 nonviolent offenders in federal prison who had their sentences commuted by President Obama.

Smith, alongside Thomas’s grandmother, were arrested in 1999 after a police raid at Thomas’s home and convicted of selling crack cocaine in 2000. His grandmother is still serving out two life sentences, with the possibility of parole after 40 years.
Thomas’ sentence was commuted as part of a presidential decree that Obama said came from what he saw as punishments not fitting the crime. "If they’d been sentenced under today’s laws, nearly all of them would have already served their time," said Obama in a video posted to the White House’s Facebook page.
