This Comedian is Crowdfunding for a Short Film About Coming Out

On first take, "Out Again" sounds like a drama: a woman visits her parents and finds out that her mother cannot remember that her daughter is gay. But New York City-based comedian and writer Robin Cloud doesn’t quite envision her debut short film that way. "Out Again" brings comedy to the two difficult subjects—coming out and Alzheimer’s Disease—that form its core.

Now, she’s raising money via Indiegogo to bring it to the masses. Adapted from a one-act play Cloud debuted at New York City’s Fresh Fruit Festival, "Out Again" draws from Cloud’s own experience watching her grandmother struggle with Alzheimer’s. Cloud, who is Black, told Colorlines in an email that the film also explores the lead character’s relationship with her parents—an interracial couple—and how it affects her own relationships.

There are six days left in Cloud’s campaign to raise $25,000. Funds will go towards paying cast and crew, location fees, marketing expenses and other production costs. Perks for those that donate at various levels include official film merch, tickets for the premiere and more.
