Responding to the arrests of protestors in Minneapolis who hit the streets to demand justice for George Floyd—the unarmed man allegedly suffocated while in police custody on May 25—activist Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp (KYRC) announced the creation of Legal Defense Initiative. Its purpose is “to support Freedom Fighters,” the organization announced via Twitter on May 29.
In solidarity w/ our brothers & sisters in Minneapolis, KYRC + @kaepernick7 established our Legal Defense Initiative to support Freedom Fighters on the ground. If you, or a loved one needs legal assistance, or to donate, go to https://t.co/BQO5g9f5wb #wegotus pic.twitter.com/5g3wn1wXso

“When there is an injustice within our community, it is our legal right to address it, by any means necessary,” the website says.
rnIt includes a form protestors can complete if they’ve been arrested in the Minneapolis-area while fighting injustice and need legal assistance. This form will then go to Kaepernick’s KYRC team and to the Minneapolis defense lawyers they’ve teamed up with to provide legal help. While KYRC will foot all necessary legal bills, they are asking for donations from the general public to help grow the fund.
As Kaepernick tweeted on May 29, “In fighting for liberation there‘s always retaliation. We must protect our Freedom Fighters.” Learn more about the defense fund by visiting the site here.
