On Wedensday Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal announced his departure from the race to be the GOP’s presidential candidate. "This is not my time, so I am suspending my campaign for President," Jindal said in a statement posted on Facebook.
Jindal’s candidacy has been a lightning rod for South-Asian Americans who see Jindal as an opportunist who disavows his own ancestry to gain conservative votes and pursues policies that hurt marginalized populations. He recently made headlines when he said doesn’t want Syrian refugees to settle in Louisiana.
Acclaimed comedian Hari Kondabolu created the hashtag #BobbyJindalIsSoWhite after Jindal’s campaign announcement in June, telling Colorlines at the time that "as an Indian-American progressive and comedian, I felt I had to respond harshly and quickly after he announced his candidacy for president."
Now, Kondabolu and others are using the hashtag to send up Jindal’s departure from the race. Some of the tweets address Jindal’s recent comments about banning Syrian refugees from settling in Louisiana. Without further ado, here are the top five tweets we saw with the hashtag today and yesterday.
